In 1916, after years of discussion between both governments, developers led by Harry Fenton purchased 10 acres (4 hectares) along the shoreline off Railroad Avenue and developed what would become Oneonta Naval Air Station (later NAS Ocala). With World War II Ella Fitzgerald recorded her song "I Can't Quit You Baby" here while stationed at NAS Ocala during World War II; this song became so well-known that it has been cited as one of America's unofficial national anthem songs In 1941, Oneonta Naval Air Station was redesignated Camp Blanding before being renamed Fort Pierce Municipal Airport when it opened in 1944 as part of Operation Torch landings following World War II . Port St. Lucie is an unincorporated community in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish explorers who landed there in 1513 on a voyage from Cuba to Hispaniola. They named thearea La Portilla because of a small island near the mouth of the harbor. A French explorer named Pierre Radisson also visited in 1668 and called it "St. Lucia." In 1765, Spain acquired what is now Miami and began development of its sugarcane industry; by 1800, sugar had become a major industry in Port St. Lucie and nearby Biscayne Bay Area.[1] The town was incorporated on April 12, 1892,[2] after being surveyed by Captain John Haines during his survey for US 1st Circuit Court which then included all present-day Miami-Dade County as well as parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties (later moved eastward). In 1912, construction began on Brickell Key Hospital – one of only two such hospitals built in Southeast Florida that year – and continued until it closed in 1951 due to financial difficulties caused by World War II rationing;[3][4][5] today it is known as Brickell Park Hospital though no patient has ever been admitted there since its closure[6] A post office was established at Port St. Lucie on October 7, 1893.[1][7] The name change came about because there were few stores open at that time so letters would be sorted by their destination before they went into circulation It should be noted that not all post offices operated at this location; some did move inland while others remained located along First Avenue (now US 1st Street) just outside of town limits
