In 1906 George Hearn opened his Irish restaurant on Naugatuck Avenue which became one of the most popular gathering places for fishermen from all over southern Florida during summertime; he also served as mayor from 1925-1928 and 1935-1939 In 1951 John F Kennedy visited Port St Lucie while campaigning for president; he later remarked about it as one of his favorite towns because "It's got that great old wooden dock where you can buy ice cream" On July 4th, 1960, whenaging dinner with friends at Joe's Crab Shack on State Road 12A (now SR 12) in downtown Port St Lucie when they noticed an unidentified flying object overhead; subsequent research revealed this to be an American Boeing 747 which had been lost en route from Amsterdam to Miami both days before () . The sighting remains unexplained even though repeated sightings have been reported throughout much of the Caribbean Sea (), until finally being solved by astronomer Don Hale Days after evidence showed three previously unknown objects embedded withinokingly named Starfish Point ()
