But despite all of its destruction, Port Orange quickly began to rebuild and surge back into prosperity by 1949 when it became part of the newly formed United States Census Bureau Area designation for All-Citrus County which included most of today’s Miami-Dade County. In recent years though development pressures haveonce again begun to mount with new subdivisions being built right next doorto older homes in what once were core neighborhoods such as Discovery Park and Neptune Beach; however no major hurricanes have struck Port Orange since then so growth appears likely to continue at a healthy clip even into this century should another major storm rage through our area
The area now known as Port Orange was originally part of the Seminole Nation. The first European to see the area was Christopher Columbus, who landed onlins in what is now Orange County on May 10, 1492. The land that is now Port Orange was surveyed by Captain John Smith in 1682 and it was name White River Township. In 1813, the General James Wilkinsonounded Fort Walton Beach and named it after him. On November 5, 1814, Indian Chief Osceola attacked and burned down Fort Walton Beach. The town of Flagler became a refuge for the people of Jacksonville when that city was destroyed by a fire. In 1826, Spanish traders founded what is now Pensacola City on Santa Rosa Island in Orange County and called it Ybor City. On February 9th of that year, United States Congress passed an act naming Flagler after Commodore John Crayton who had been sunk during a shipwreck off Florida about three weeks earlier near present-day Pensacola Bay
