Port Orange, Florida is a small town in Volusia County, Florida that lies on the mouth of the St. Johns River. The population was 7,992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando metropolitan area. The community began as a fishing village on the lower tidal section of Port Orange Bay, about southwest of present-day downtown Port Orange and east of today's city limits. It developed as a major seaport for oranges grown in northeasternmost Florida and shipped downriver to markets in South Carolina and Georgia. In 1870, orange growers organized into cooperative societies and built gristmills to crush oranges for juice or export; these mills remain in use to this day. In 1887, local merchants founded the town post office with Wm. Clements as its first clerk and later James Skelton as its first treasurer; they named it after General James Halleck Greene (1795-1874), who had been their political leader during Reconstruction. At its peak in 1920, Port Orange had a population of around 12,000 people; however, by 1930 it had shrunk to 1,500 due to rapid growth within Orlando suburban areas. During World War II, Port Orange played an important role in supplying munitions plants across southwestern Florida with war material from local suppliers; construction jobs were created throughout the city during wartime industrialization which continues to this day. Port Orange is a city in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It was founded in 1837 by Major General James K. Polk and his wife Julia Child as a trading post on the St. Johns River. The city was named after General Polk's childhood home of Port Orford, Oregon. In 1907, the name of the city was changed to Jacksonville because it became increasingly connected with Jacksonville, Florida through trade and travel. As a result of this connection, Jacksonville held more than twice as much cultural significance for Orlando as Port Orange did for Jacksonville until Port Orford reopened its port in 1978. In 1970, Mayor Bob Buckhorn declared October 20th "Port orange day". The date is celebrated each year to commemorate the anniversary of first settlement by American pioneers at what is now known as Northeast Third Street and Northwest Fourth Avenue in what is today downtown Port Orange. On that date in 1870 members of Captain John Houstons Expedition journeyed downriver from Fort Pierce to find freshwater fishing grounds for their botanical gardens near present-day Green Cove Springs and encountered tribal member Chief Tocobaga who told them about an opening in the mainland where fresh water could be found inland while also providing hunting opportunities nearby for white men and animals such as deer and bears The founding fathers were very pleased with this information so they sent out explorer Captain Bowen Westcott with orders to find out if he could obtain access to this site so they might relocate their families further inland After months of exploration no evidence could be found supportable enough to warrant moving forward with plans however when Bowen returned there were two small creeks flowing into the St Johns River which had recently been opened up by settlers - these are now known collectively as Waterfront Boulevard This discovery led directly to development around Northeast Third Street/Northwest Fourth Avenue which today forms one block east of downtown Jacksonville
The town of Port Orange, Florida was founded on December 12, 1837 by Gideon Welles and his family. The Welles family had emigrated from England in 1824. They settled in what is now the city of Palm Beach County. The first post office in Port Orange was established on October 3, 1839. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson, who fought against Native Americans at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in 1812.
