During World War II, Port orange was one of 6 communities in Florida that were bombed by the US military.
Port Orange, Florida is a city located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 362 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit this area were Spanish explorers who came ashore in Marco Polo's sailing vessel in 1513 and named it La Isla de Santa Maria (the Island of Saint Mary). Spanish traders established a trading post here in 1665. In 1795, when the US purchased Florida from Spain, Port Orange became part of US territory. After being ceded back to Spain by treaty in 1821, it was briefly under Mexican control from 1825 to 1828 before becoming an American state. In 1907, during the construction of Interstate 95, "the orange belt" along that route was developed as a new town for workers working on the highway project. By 1930 its population had reached 2,500 residents and it became known as "The City That Could". The city's growth continued through World War II with the arrival of IBM engineers and others who worked on developing defense plants; during that time its population increased sixfold to over 10,000 people. During much of this period Port Orange increasingly functioned as a bedroom community for Orlando instead of serving as an important center for economy or culture; nevertheless its citizens have always been proud advocates for their city and continue to play an active role in local government. One significant accomplishment during this time was the founding in 1945 of the University Of Central Florida which today comprises one third of all undergraduate students at UCF South Campus in Orlando . Port Orange experienced several natural disasters during Hurricane Ivan: On September 25th 1998 there were two tornadoes touching down within about five miles (8 km) each other just outside town limits killing twelve people including four children playing near their home; Ivan caused extensive damage particularly around downtown where homes were destroyed or severely damaged beyond repair; also several businesses were destroyed or closed due to damage done by wind gusts up to 100 mph (160 km/h).
