Port Orange, Florida is a city located in Hillsborough County, Florida. The population was 508 at the 2010 census and 523 as of the 2016 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area around Port Orange has been inhabited by humans since Paleo-Indian times. In 1636, Father Gabriel Gomez built a chapel on what is now US Highway 98 in present day Port Orange. At that time it was known as Indian Key. In 1821 town platting began with 7 lots grant to John Pritchett and others for $2 per acre (less than 1/4 acre). In 1824 James Auld purchased land from Captain Kidd for $100 per acre ($1/acre at that time). By 1860 there were over 100 homes in town and about 150 people living there; most of whom worked on plantations near Tampa or Clearwater which supplied their needs including fertilizer, lumber, and corduroys (now jeans). The first post office in town was established in 1825 with Eustache McCoy as the first Postmaster General. The name "Port Orange" changed to "Port Charlotte" in 1830 after a ship called HMS Beagle sailed through the area en route to South America during this period of British colonization. In 1854 David Cramer donated land north of present day US Highway 98 to become what became Port orange beach park which opened to the public in 1860 when sharecroppers who had grown rice there founded a park organization called Bay City Park Company Ltd., later renamed Friends of Bay City Park Incorporated [FBCP] which served as its Board of Directors until 1951 when it merged into city government under then Mayor John Giannini's control becoming City Hall Park District #1 . Many notable people have lived or worked here such as: Lou Holtz who coached American football for many years before moving on to manage NFL teams New York Jets and Washington Redskins; Dr Pepper creator Dr Pepper Snapple Group Chairman Ross Perot who also interests himself both politically and philanthropically within local community organizations currently chaired by his widow Patricia Nixon; former Mayor Giannini who singlehandedly created much needed infrastructure throughout downtown while also serving terms beginning in 1984 until he retired effective January 1st 2009 after more than 20 years service; current Mayor Pete Buttigieg whose upbringing takes place primarily outside of St Petersburg so he brings knowledge specific to Tallahassee Beach - an adjacent neighborhood - making him one stop on his political journey from state legislator representing Pinellas County seat 2nd Congressional district held by incumbent Bill Sanford

Port Orange, Florida is a town in Citrus County,Florida, United States. The population was 5,694 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Wakefield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Port Orange was first settled by Seminole Indians in the 18th century. A mission was established there in 1798 and named after Saint John Baptist, also known as Jonas Plantation. In 1838, Captain William Harker purchased land here and founded Harker's Landing on Lake Worth Boulevard to provide a landing for shipping coming into Tampa Bay from the east coast of America. The town developed rapidly because it was near key railroad connections and served as an agricultural center for citrus production until the early 20th century when agriculture became less important and industry took over. By 1930, Port Orange had become one of the most important citrus towns in Florida with its own station on Pensacola Street serving as both a commercial and passenger depot. However, during World War II Port Orange began to decline due to strategic bombing raids by the USAAF which destroyed much of its infrastructure including its port facilities and commerce suffered greatly. However, Port Orange has bounced back since then thanks to various programs such as economic development assistance from HUD (the Housing Authority for Alien Minors) through Specialty Properties Development Authority (SPDA), which has redeveloped several derelict properties into mixed-use buildings or apartments; attracting businesses and residents who have returned to revive downtown; new single family homes being built along Interstate 476 surrounded by new parks giving rise to what used to be called "the green city" In recent years efforts have been made by City Council members Dave Hughes (D) and Alfredo Ramirez (I) appointed pursuant thereto to develop plans for redevelopment/new construction adjacent First Coast Bank Building located at 4015 University Ave., between First Coast Drive & I-476 just south of downtown This project is being led by Jason Beacham with cooperation from his predecessor David Greenfeld who will continue as Economic Development Coordinator Once completed it will be home to two large retailers: Lowe's Home Improvement Company relocated from Altamonte Springs - making this one of only two areas in Florida where Lowe's Home Improvement stores are open 365 days per year;[2]and walmart Supercenter announced they plan set up shop on University Avenue across fromailingFirst Coast bank building
Port Orange, Florida was founded in 1839 by Captain John F. O'Malley and his family. The first permanent settler in the area was Capt. Isaac Cummins, who arrived in 1845. In 1850, Captain John A. Stephenson arrived with his family and set up a trading post on the site of what is now the Village of Port Orange. In 1853, Commodore James Wainwright made landfall at Port Orange and named it after himself, Commodore James Wainwright's Landing on Palm Beach County’s Outer Banks. In 1865, General Nelson A. Miles disembarked his troops at mouth of St Johns River to launch an attack against Confederate forces at Fort Donelson near Jacksonville. At night Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Ewing led a detachment of men under Flag Officer William Pogue through blinding snowdrifts to storm into Fort Donelson's innerworks and capture its cannons before withdrawing without loss to their own forces or the enemy
