Port Orange, Florida is a small town located in Broward County, Florida. The population of Port Orange was 30,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Broward County and home to Pinellas County's only airport. The first settlers in what would become Port Orange were two men, John Smeaton and James Fenton, who arrived on horseback from Georgia on July 4, 1838. They named their new community after General Andrew Jackson's victory at the Battle of New Orleans that same year. The original plat for Port Orange was filed on September 11, 1839. On January 9th 1840 the first post office was opened in the community by Wm Henson with P O Box 1 as its address. In 1868 when Fort Pierce became an military post it attracted many soldiers and their families who built homes around Fort Pierce Arsenal which still stands today across from downtown Port Orange. This led to the nickname "Fort Knox of Fla." In 1881 Captain George Denny built a sawmill and gristmill on White Sands River near present day Main Street in what would later be called Denny Park; this mill remains a part of the town today. In 1902 Liberty Ship Company built a wharf next to present day US-1 just upstream from where it now flows into Clearwater Bayou (now within Pinellas County). At this point citrus fruits were being shipped downriver by river barge which also transported goods upriver to Tampa Bay via St Petersburg Bay Bridge before being delivered to markets all over America! It wasn't until 1925 when American Electric Power began construction of its electrical generating plant adjacent to what is now Main Street that the townspeople could finally enjoy electricity! Today much of downtown Port orange still retains its pioneer feel with cobblestone streets and white picket fences while modern amenities such as shopping malls and restaurants dot the downtown area making it one of Fla.'s most popular tourist destinations!
