Port Orange, Florida is a small town in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. The population was 3,564 at the 2010 census. It is located on U.S. Highway 1 about 15 miles west of Tampa and 25 miles east of Orlando. The name "Port Orange" comes from the original land grant given to the community by Governor Andrew Jackson in 1824 as part of his Homestead Act program. In 1875, General James Bogue, who had been commandant of Fort George Wright during the Seminole War, donated land that became Port Orange proper. The first settlers in Port Orange were Captain John Tisdale and his family in 1827-8; they built a cabin on what is now Second Street near present day University Avenue and planted African American cottonseed deep into the swamp for seed storage until it could be cultivated elsewhere. After being forced out of their home by Native Americans in 1830-1, Captains Tisdale and William Hickey founded an agricultural cooperative known as The Agricultural Society which grew to become one of Florida's leading landowners through its purchase and sale of acreage (including portions of Tampa) and other commercial endeavors until 1907 when it went bankrupt due to prohibitionism.. In 1875 General James Bogue donated land that became Port Orange proper along with some other property to form Polk County after he evacuated all US forces from Cuba following President Ulysses S Grant's victory over Cuba's José Martí... During Reconstruction this area was known as White Heights because many white families moved into what was then black District 2 adjacent to modern day University Avenue between Second Street and Third Street where today there are several businesses including Albertsons grocery store which opened in 1940 just across from where First Baptist Church once stood before being demolished for parking garage construction starting in 1984

Port Orange, Florida is a town in Orange County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Port Orange was first settled by English colonists in 1763. The town was founded on what is now Decatur Street and First Avenue. In 1839, Jacksonville businessman and State Senator James Ketchum donated land to form what would become Port Orange Township. A post office called "Port orange" was established in 1851, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1907, citrus growers Arthur Hargrave and Wm. Stephenson formed the Jacksonville Citrus Growers Cooperative to increase production of oranges from within Jacksonville's limits rather than shipping them all the way to Stonington for marketation and storage. The cooperative became one of the largest citrus companies in Florida when it merged with other operations in 1928. The original white-frame buildings that still stand in downtown Port Orange were built as part of this cooperative effort; they are still used today as offices or meeting spaces for various organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club of Port Orange
Port Orange was founded in 1834 by Captain James Cook as a trading post on the Indian River. The town grew rapidly after the discovery of oil in nearby Jacksonville and it became a major center for oil production. The town was destroyed by fire in 1915, but quickly rebuilt. It is now a thriving community with many businesses and cultural attractions.
