The village of Port Orange was founded by Great Britain's East India Company in 1795 as a trading post on the lower St Johns River. The British government bought it from the company in 1814 and renamed it Fort George after General George Washington's flagship at that site. In 1832, settlers from Georgia arrived and started to develop what would become Port Orange. A road was built through the town to connect it with Jacksonville; this road became known as U.S. 1 (later I-4). The first store opened in 1836 and farming began around that time. In 1851, an important canal project connected Tampa Bay with inland waterways and made possible large-scale phosphate production near Jupiter – eventually leading to Jacksonville's economic growth. On April 6, 1886, during a severe storm known as "Tampa Bay Lightning", much damage were done to downtown Port orange when waves crashed onto shore along US 1 just south of downtown causing most of the destroyed businesses and homes to be razed for lack of insurance coverages preventing them from being rebuilt or replaced until weeks later when more insurance came in time for Reconstruction efforts within days following passage of federal income tax law - making Port Orange one of many towns nationwide that experienced rapid growth during Reconstruction period across USA In 1914-1945 there was significant growth due to World War II shipping activity which created thousands new jobs After 1945 small town declined until 2000s where it has been slowly recovering back up again due to increased tourism which has brought new development into town such as an amusement park called "Kings Dominion" adjacent to downtown business district

Port Orange, Florida is a city in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,535 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. The name "Port Orange" was given to the town by General James Wilkinson in 1795 as part of his treaty with Spain. The first permanent settler in what is now Port Orange was Nicholas de Funck on December 10, 1837. On November 1, 1839, U.S. Commodore George Preble established a naval base and trading post here called Fort Walton Beach on Indian Bayou (present-day US 98). In 1892 the Jacksonville and Miami Railway built a line from Jax to Port Orange and named it for then-Mayor William Haines of Jacksonville; Haines had been elected mayoralty two years earlier and had opposed construction of the railway because its projected route would run through downtown Jacksonville near his home instead of along Indian Bayou where he thought it would be more beneficial for businesses and people living near him to situated their homes near this natural waterway source rather than away from it on Commercial Street which lay between Jaxport Landing on one side and Jupiter Landing on the other side of Indian Bayou; however Miami Mayor Manuel Lighthouse moved quickly to have City Hall moved onto Commercial Street so that Lighthouse could continue serving as an office until new Town Hall could be erected in time for Mayor Haines' inauguration ceremony scheduled for May 6th but never took place In 1899 when designation changed from 'Jupiter Landing' to 'Port Orange,' most likely due To increase competition from development at Palm Coast (then known as Winter Park), Mayor Elisha Hicks ordered all lights put out at night during Carnival season effective February 1899; this order possibly reflect prejudice against African Americans who were then still considered second class citizens according to many white South Floridians
Port Orange was the original capital of Florida and is now a part of Orlando. It was founded in 1763 by Captain John Keith, and became a major trading center for the area. The city was destroyed by Confederate forces during the American Civil War, but was rebuilt and renamed Jacksonville after General Omar Bradley.
