Port Orange, Florida is a city in Marion County, Florida, United States. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marion County. The first permanent settler in what is now Port Orange was John Pritchard in 1824. By 1840, there were over 60 people living hereabouts. A town site was surveyed and purchased by J.H. Burch in 1848 and construction started on the first courthouse and jail in that year; it opened on March 14th of that year. In 1861, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest called on General James Wofford to relieve him from duty at Fort Donelson because he felt pressure from President Abraham Lincoln to evacuate all Confederate troops east of Memphis, Tennessee as part of an overall strategy to remove all Confederate forces from Alabama and ultimately southern states (see "Forrest's Raid").
