The first post office was established in 1916, and the first store opened its doors in 1917. In 1926, Pompano Beach became one of two towns incorporated into Broward County afterBroward county was created from Palm Beach County and Miami-Dade County. By 1930, the population had reached 1,200 residents and by 1940 it had reached 2,000 residents. As World War II approached and war production increased in south Florida due to the defense buildup duringWWII, many citizens left for military service or other opportunities overseas; however, most returned home before hostilities ended in 1945. Pompano Beach was founded in 1915 by two Italian immigrants, Pietro and Gaetano Pompano. The area that is now Pompano Beach was originally part of the Manchacox Indian Reservation. In 1916, the United States Congress passed a bill providing for the creation of an experimental beach on parsemantic Key Biscayne. On July 20, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the bill creating Pompano Beach. The first hotel in Pompano Beach was built in 1919 by Fenton Dixon and his wife Lillian Dixon. The original name of the hotel was "Dixon's Bayou" but it changed to "Pompano Beach" in 1922 because of objections from some business people who felt that they had been given a undeserved advantage over other towns on the island because of their location on Pensacola Bay. In 1931, Hollywood star Clark Gable moved into one of the first homes in Pompano Beach and began to make movies there. Gable's home at 4441 Atlantic Avenue became known as "Gable Manor". Gable died in 1988 and his estate sold it to developers who turned it into an apartment complex called Gables Landing which still stands today. In 1984, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of what remain from Gables Landing and replaced it with a new development called North Pointe Park which still stands today. In 1990, Miami Vice creator Vicente Fernández bought 5 acres near Pompano Boulevard and Ocean Drive for $2 million dollars which he used as the setting for his movie office complex known as Playa VistaWest (later renamed Regal Beverly Hills).
