In 1954, Douglas Hennessey opened Hennessey's Gun Shop on Fourth Street which became one of the most successful gun shops in Broward County before closing its doors for good in 1984. The first Pompano Beach was established in 1919 as an agricultural community by brothers Leo and Emilio Garrido. They named their community after the Spanish word "pompán" meaning “headland” or “prominence” because of its high elevation and scenic view of Mar-a-Lago and Palm Beach County. The Garridos had been residents of Jupiter, Florida since 1892 when they came to America from Spain with their father who had settled thereabouts on his estate known as La Paloma de los Gassetes (now part ofWest Palm Beach). In 1924 the Garridos moved their family to Pompano Beach and continued to operate their farm until it sold in 1950 to Mr. Frank Hirschmann for $4,500 cash. In 1951Mr Hirschmann donated land for what would become Pompano Boulevard which runs through center of town and became one of the most important streets in town with its many shops, restaurants and services that have continued up through the years including Bennigan's Pub., A&W Buffet., Sunoco Supermarket., Post Office & Bank (1956),Pumphouse Casino Resort ('63)and currently IHOP.'s restaurant inside pumphouse casino resort has been continuously open since 1978'. The now defunct Stonington Hotel was built in 1926 on a tract donated by Alex Cramer which still stands today across from post office on North side of Pompano Blvd just east side from Neil Mall (the old timers say if you walk down North side from main mall 3 blocks EAST along Pensacola Rd then turn left going down hill you will find Stonington Hotel on your right hand side). Alex Cramer also donated money for a baseball diamond next door to post office on end street which we now call Neil Mall property line
