Today there are over 100 structures located in this village complex dating back to 1928. In 1892 a small post office was established at Pompano Beach with mail sent by railcar to Fort Lauderdale. In 1923 a general store opened on Third Avenue between Seventh Street and Government Way while another store was built on Eighth Street between Second Road (now US1A) and First Road (now Pompano Boulevard). A hotel called The Sands became operational in 1925 following completion of a $25 million bond issue that raised money for improvements to the beachfront community that included an electricity plant, theater, swimming pool and more than 40 singles rooms/cabins overlooking palm trees tax free. The town’s name changed from Caney Key to Pompano Beach on November 5th 1949 when voters passed a referendum authorizing use of the new moniker for all areas within municipal limits including those lying outside Of Dixie Highway A2Z immediately south thereof including Palm Coast eastward until reaching Boca Raton proper thence northward through Wynwood unincorporated territory constituting part of Broward County until reached by Orlando situated wholly within Miamidade County having received word thereof from Dr J F Kapp who resided therein with his family vacationing during that year after selling his interest in an orange grove adjoining Boca Raton proper

In 2002, Hurricane Andrew struck Florida causing extensive damage to coastal communities around Miami-Dade County including Pompano Beach which suffered from almost total destruction with over 100 homes destroyed or damaged. After months of reconstruction, business has resumed slowly but steadily in Pompano Beach thanks to its strong community spirit and supportive government programs which have kept it economically thriving since its restoration
