Pompano Beach, Florida is a town located in Broward County, Florida. The population was 18,529 at the 2010 census. The name derives from Pompano Island, which is located in the town. The island has a small population and no businesses or residences. The only industry in the town is tourism, which contributes about $1 million to the local economy each year. Pompano Beach was first settled by English settlers in 1846. After passage of the Indian Removal Act in 1830, many Seminole Indians were forced from their homes in Florida and into what is now Alabama and Georgia. A group of Englishmen who had been living on Palm Boulevard near Fort Lauderdale decided to move to Pompano Beach because it was an open beach with good water access and there were no indigenous people living thereabouts. The first post office was established in Pompano Beach on December 11, 1848. In 1860, Jens Jensen opened his store on Fourth Street corner of Sunrise Highway. Two years later he built a large house for his family on Second Street corner of Third Avenue and became proprietor of Jens Jensen's Store & Luncheonette (now part of First National Bank). By 1870, most residents had moved away from Pompano Beach because they found it too difficult to get goods delivered due to high transportation costs and lack of roads through the area; however, some continued to live there until after World War II when development brought even more people and traffic onto Palm Boulevard making it impossible for them to stay put. In 1901 developer Waddell Crouch began developing properties north of Eighth Street along Biscayne Bay including land that would eventually become Pompano Beach; he named his new community "Pompton". Construction ceased during World War I because building materials were hard to come by; but resumed soon afterwards when war-time production resumed at Yankton Proving Ground outside Sioux City Iowa as part of program called "War Production Administration". During this time Pompton developed into one of South Florida's largest housing developments with over 1,000 homes being built before 1942 when Tampa Bay Area construction shifted focus back towards landed resources during World War II naval buildups leaving much unbuilt land throughout South Florida undeveloped again following hostilities ended During the late 1940s thru early 1950s several stores closed down due mainly To: bad business practices such as price gouging etc.; changing tastes consequent thereto among patrons resulting In absenteeism rates skyrocketing up approximately 50%. Pompano Beach is a town on the east coast of Florida, United States. The population was 3,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of Palm Beach County. The first place in Pompano Beach known as "Pompano" was located on Long Key Peninsula, south of where the town now stands. The name comes from HMS "Pompeii", which sank in 1811 while under tow to Miami by British Admiral Sir John Hawkins after being accidentally discovered by Spanish ships off Pompano Beach. The remains of "Pompeii" are still visible offshore, and are a popular tourist destination for those who visit the area during hurricane season. In 1861, Capt. George Fenton opened a post office at what is now Pompano Beach with mail service only from Jacksonville until 1865 when it became open to all residents of Palm Beach County including Pompano Beach; this post office remained in operation until 1959 (although some records show it operated from 1884-1889). In 1915, JB Hunt & Sons established a boat dealership andmarine store at what is now Marathon Point Boulevard called JB Hunt’s Marina which continues to be operational today as part of Marathon Pointe redevelopment project - one of many businesses founded or operating here during the early 20th century growth and development of this historically significant community – including such noted names as Safeway®, Howard Johnson’s®, Atlantic City casino hotel®, Sears Roebuck& Co., Coral Gables beachfront resort®, Embassy Suites® Hotel and several other well-known businesses that have since long disappeared but left their mark on local history.
