The history of Pompano Beach goes back to the early 1800s when Spanish settlers arrived in what is now Pompano Beach. At first they used the beach as their primary means of transportation because it was close to where they lived. However, eventually they began exporting crops and goods from this area so development started around this time. In 1907, Pompano Beach became part of Miami-Dade County after being organized as a municipality by then- Mayor Manuel Miranda. This allowed for more businesses and people to move into this area and make it their permanent residence. By 1920, there were over 100 businesses operating in Pompano Beach with resident populations totaling over 1,000 people. During World War II many patriotic Americans came to help fight in Europe but few thought about returning home until war ended and all hostilities had dissipated. Upon learning about how much damage had been done during the conflict many individuals decided to come back home at once including several mayors from Miami-Dade County who offered them homes or business properties if they relocated permanently within our county boundaries (Anderson 1951). As a result of these efforts many people moved back into old brick buildings on *Stuart Street* which still stands today (Moses 1998; Mose 2000). Many famous citizens such as Jackie Gleason made their mark on our community while also making donations towards local causes (Moses 1998). Pompano Beach is located on the edge of Palm Beach County, Florida and part of Broward County. The U.S. Coast Guard has a headquarters in Pompano Beach and maintains a pier that offers views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.
