In Pompano Beach, Florida, there is a history that goes back over sixty years. The town was founded in 1925 by two brothers named Harry and John Vocal. The first store in Pompano Beach was called the Vocal Store and it operated from what is now the corner of 3rd Street and Federal Highway. In 1950, Harry Vocal sold his business to his son-in-law, Joe Soper. Joe Soper renamed the store the Soper Store and continued to sell ammunition until 1984 when he passed away. In 1987, Lenny Bowerman bought the store from Joe Soper’s widow, Phyllis. At Lenny Bowerman’s insistence, all of the ammo products were rebranded as “Pompano Beach Ammo” with a blue checker on top. The first time that I ever went into an ammunition store was in 1984 when I bought my first handgun at Lenny Bowerman’s Pompano Beach Ammo store. It was a G19 pistol and I remember Boy Scout Troop #2 coming up to me after school one day and asking me where I got it! Ammunition has always been a big part of our lives here in Pompano Beach – it is still something that we enjoy buying and using today!
