Plantation is a town in Tallahassee, Florida, United States. The population was 2,658 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–St. Petersburg–Boca Raton metropolitan area. Plantation was named after Sir William John Plantation in 1763 and was first settled by English colonists in the early 1800s. The town's history can be traced back to 1763 when Sir William John Plantation acquired land east of Stokes Road on which he built a plantation known as "Patience". In 1824, James A. Haley bought from Plantation and developed it into what is now known as Haleyville. In 1845, David Levy purchased from Haley and renamed it "Plantation". In 1865, Confederate General Jumper Coker moved his command headquarters to Platoon House on Park Avenue (now State Road 417) in what is now Plantation and began using it as their winter quarters until they surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. After the war ended, many of Coker's officers and men returned to live here while they awaited trial or transportation back to North Carolina or Virginia. In 1905, the Panama Canal Company organized an unsuccessful effort to build a canal through the center of Florida that would have shortened shipping times between Miami and Tampa Bay by about two days; however no real progress was made until 1914 when advances were made in engineering technology which allowed for a much more efficient canal construction project that eventually became reality with Panamanian help. Today remnants of old plantation homes can still be seen throughout the community such as Old Hammond Place where slaves once lived before being freed in 1865; also found are some large slave gardens still standing today including one called "Haley Garden" which features 4 beautiful white columns with Corinthian capitals that are over 50 feet tall! By 1665, Plantation had been established by English colonists. The colony grew rapidly due to the land's strategic location, as well as its slave trade. In 1821, Plantation was sold to American investors, who renamed it Fort Myers. However, the fort never stood up to military attack and fell into disrepair over time. Finally abandoned in 1838, it became a ghost town until it was reactivated in 1984 as part of the Museum of Old Florida history program
