Plantation, Florida was founded in 1835 by James and Nancy Plantation. The Plantations were a large slave-holding plantation that operated in the area now known as Jacksonville, Florida. The original plantation consisted of over 350 acres and was home to many enslaved African Americans. After the end of the American Civil War, the Plantations were sold to Captain John Ligon who moved them to what is now Winter Garden, Florida. There they continued to be run as a slave-holding plantation until 1830 when they became part of the Seminole Indian Tribe. In 1830, Captain John Ligon purchased approximately 660 acres of land near Winter Garden which he named "The Plantation" after himself and his family. On this property, he built a house that still stands today. Captain John Ligon's son Edward bought additional land around 1845 which he named "The Old Plantation". This land included additional slaves and also served as a home for Colonel David Walker who was later elected president of Confederate States of America. Colonel David Walker's family also lived on this property until 1861 when it was destroyed by Union troops during the American Civil War. Afterward, most of the slaves who lived on The Old Plantation disappeared into slavery or freedom while some managed to stay behind and eventually become residents of Winter Garden. In addition to their plantations in Jacksonville and Winter Garden, Captain John Ligon and his wife Nancy also had plantations located in Stonington (now Fort Pierce) on Lake Poinciana and Kissimmee on Citrus Island between 1840-1845 respectively. These plantations were not as large but did have significant acreage for slave labor however all three properties eventually fell victim to bankruptcy during the 1850s due largely to problems with white racism towards black laborers throughout much of south Florida at this time
