Plantation, Florida was founded by Captain John Plant in the early 1800s. The area now known as Plantation was originally a Seminole Indian reservation.The first white settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s, and by 1821, Plantation had become an agricultural community with over 300 houses.In 1826, Captain Plant sold his land to Colonel James Wilkinson, who renamed it "Wilkinson's plantation". After Wilkinson's death in 1830, his son George Wickham took over the property and continued expanding it into what is now southern Miami-Dade County. In 1851, Colonel John Hagerty bought Wilkinson's plantation and made it into a large cotton plantation with over 5,000 acres of land. By 1865, Hagerty had acquired 8 additional plantations and became one of the largest landowners in south Florida. During World War II, Plantation played a significant role in military activity around Miami-Dade County. On October 30th 1942 while American forces were fighting Nazi Germany on mainland Europe, some 10% of all Production on plants within Miami-Dade County was devoted to war production; these plants included 20% cotton and 60% tobacco products. One plant employed 1/4 of all workers at South Park Farm near Kendallville during World War II (the other three plants produced only food for soldiers). Plantation was a small, isolated community in what is now Broward County, Florida, between Fort Lauderdale and Miami. The plantation system began as early as the seventeenth century with African slaves who were transported from Africa to be worked on sugarcane plantations in South America. Plantation life revolved around slave work and their own individual needs. There was little development until the mid-nineteenth century when businessmen bought up tracts of land for development. Plantation architecture reflects this lifestyle with large, cheerful rooms with high ceilings and wide corridors that connected the many cells or rooms of the plantation house. While there were some houses that were less inviting, such as the Oneonta House which burned down in 1868, most plantations had impressive mansions that became known as "The White Slave Masters' Paradise." Many people have contributed to our understanding of plantation life in Florida. Dr. James Mosely wrote an excellent book about plantation life called "The Negroes in Florida: A History from 1619 to 1865" which was published in 1961. This book has been reprinted several times and is still very popular among historians today. In addition to Drs Mosely and Griggs, other important scholars who have written about plantation life include Professor Wilfred Eaves who specializes in slave narratives; Professor emeritus Hernando de Soto; and Drs Edwin Bryant and Clyde Halliday who are both specialists on Civil War era slavery through research papers they have written on specific plantations within that time period. Some researchers believe that it was not until after World War II that we began to understand fully how prevalent slavery actually was throughout much of the United States before it started happening here too! We know now that over one million Africans were taken into bondage across all sorts of industries across North America during this time period- making PlantationFlorida one of Americas largest slave states by far! Our current understanding also helps us better understand why so many African Americans ended up living here after emancipation occurred- due to both economic reasons (due to lack of other options) as well as racism towards them at every level of society!
The Plantation of Florida was a complex and time-consuming process that began in the late 18th century and lasted until the early 20th century. From this point forward, the English landowners managed their properties using various forms of ownership and control over their tenants and workers. In 1833, Spain transferred jurisdiction over Florida to the United States as part of its Acquisition of Texas. As part of this transaction, Spanish title to all lands east of the Mississippi River was given to US citizens named Adams, Houston, Smith, Polk (the last two being later replaced with US presidents), Buchanan (under whose rule slavery was abolished), Clay (a general during both Mexican and American occupations), Sherman (during Reconstruction), Grant (because he had been governor of New York City at the time), and Franklin D Roosevelt (president during World War II). At this time, plantation owners continued to use African Americans as slaves primarily for labor on their plantations but also used them as informants or political advisors due to their high loyalty potentials within slave societies. During World War II many African Americans who had worked for white employers became soldiers because they could not be forced into battle because of racial prejudice against black soldiers.
