Plantation is a word that means land grant given to a settler. It refers to the period from the early 17th century in North America until about 1800, when most of what is now Florida was acquired through purchase or cession from Spain and other European powers. The first English settlers in what is now Florida were the Pilgrims, who landed on an island called Cape Canaveral in 1564. The area became part of England as part of the Treaty of Paris following the English Civil War (1648-50). The United States acquired Florida from Spain in 1821 after victory in the Mexican-American War (1846-1847). He named his new plantation "Moses Landing". Moseley had been born into a family of ranters and farmers who had come overland from Maine during the antebellum period. He believed that emancipation proclamation issued by President James K. Polk would open up many acres of slave country to white settlement; he accordingly began planting rice and other crops on his land within two years. In 1850 he sold his holdings to General Waddell for $5 million sterling ($22 million current value). During Reconstruction (1865-1913), Plantation was one of several areas where African Americans were granted privilege through legislation such as the Tuskegee Airmen case (which established black aviation rights), literacy tests and voting rights while their owners faced economic hardship. From 1870 to 1930 some 585 blacks worked at Plantation: cooks, janitors, maids, waiters/waitresses, drivers/household slaves and farmhands. After World War II plantation workers underwentlarge changes with mechanization which led to increased poverty and unemployment among black Floridians working outside permanent jobs on plantations during this time frame
