Captain Aiken renamed the plantation "Aiken's Plantation" in honor of his benefactor; however, due to its location near Fort Jackson only a small share of production took place here before Captain Aiken discontinued operations in 1865 because he could not find buyers for his products outside Jacksonville. Since then almost all aspects of life at "Aiken's Plantation" have been conducted by descendants of Captain Aiken family members who are still present today on several parcels within the limits of present-day Plantationtown."

This order caused great anger among many plantation owners who still held slaves even though they had ceased working them six months earlier. Many Poor Law Unions decided to keep their slaveholders as employees despite this order; however, several thousand men and women from Plantation went into service as Confederate soldiers during World War II under the command of General Robert E Lee.
The original white settlers in Plantation, Florida were the Hannibals. The Hannibals were Native American followers of a chief named Hernando who migrated from South Carolina in the early 17th century. They arrived in what is now Plantation, Florida about 1663. From there, they began to build their own homes and plantations. By 1800, Plantation had a population of about 100 people. In 1836, the United States acquired Florida from Spain as part of the Seminole Wars. The new government decided that plantation life was not ideal for blacks and ordered all blacks to leave by 1840. Some did voluntarily while others were forced out with violence or starvation. About 60% of the black population in Plantation was forcibly removed. Aftermath: After being forced out of their homes and lives, many African Americans found themselves living on reservations or in other parts ofFlorida until well into the 20th century.
