Gun target history in Plantation, Florida started with the arrival of Europeans in the area in the early 1700s. The first European settlers to arrive in Plantation were Frenchmen and their Indian allies, who erected a trading post here on May 25, 1763. The British also arrived soon after, but they did not establish a permanent presence in Plantation until AFTER the American Revolution. By 1815, however, English colonists had largely replaced all of the French and Indian occupants of Plantation. During this time period there were several types of gun targets available for use by Americans: Musket balls (25-pounders), Pistol rounds (6-inch calibers), Shotgun shells (8-inch calibers), and Rifle bullets (14-inch calibers). Gunners would often use these types of targets to practice shooting at different distances while “living” off their pay as soldiers during wartime or during peacetime when there was no need to carry around any weapons. In 1836 an armory was built on the site that eventually became known as Fort Myers Place. This armory was used primarily for storage purposes and never served as a firing range for American troops. However, it is interesting to note that this armory actually housed two cannons from HMS Resolution which had been captured by American forces during the Seminole Wars years earlier! In 1911 an additional armory was built on what is now called State Road 7 about 1/2 mile west of where Fort Myers Place once stood. This new armory became known as Camp Chase Armory and it served principally as a military training ground for Army officers up until World War II when it reverted back to its original civilian purpose. A number of other buildings have also been constructed on or near Fort Myers Place over time; these include: A chapel (1912) which still stands today; An elementary school (1930) which still functions today; A fire station (1942) which also functions today; A hospital (1964) which is currently being renovated; And finally, a shopping center(1976) which has since been demolished...allowingstarstruck visitors only limited glimpses into what once graced this beautiful spot!

Smith built a large mansion called "Plantation Hills" on what is now Parkway Boulevard east of I-10 near East Lake Road. TheSmiths hosted important political figures such as President Franklin D. Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt at their home during World War II while they struggled to make ends meet from profits generated from leasing Plantation Hill to other people or businesses. After World War II, Smith turned his attention to agriculture and development around his estate properties which he continued to own until his death in 1978.
