He named it Fort Duval after Duval Island in what is now Jacksonville,Florida. In that year he built a house which still stands today known as Governor's House (now part of University of Miami). In 1836, Andrew Johns organized a group of investors to purchase some land east of Tampa Bay for development into a town called Johnsborough which would be named after them. They started building their homes and shops around this time and by 1840 they had a population of about 350 people. By 1850 they had enlarged their holdings to over 2 square miles (5 km2) and renamed themselves "Plantation". They were able to get support from state legislators to build roads, schools, churches and other necessities such as an arsenal so that they could defend themselves from Seminole Indians who were raiding their plantations yearly. During the Civil War many residents left Plantation for different reasons including fear for their safety or because they didn't want to fight against America's main adversary at that time - England. Colonel Taylor died in 1812 and his estate passed down through his family until it was sold to George Washington Carver in 1907. During World War II (1939-1945), many plants were used for military purposes including making munitions; processing food supplies; housing troops; and providing entertainment for soldiers stationed at Camp Lejeune outside Jacksonville Beach. Many homes that remain standing today date from this time period including those at Parkland Manor (now known as Pinellas County Courthouse) and Belle Terre plantation (now known as Historic District No 2).
