The town grew quickly and soon became an important center of trade and industry. In 1827, Plantation became part of Florida, and its economy boomed. However, after Seminole Wars resulted in large losses for the country, Florida voted to secede from the Union in 1860. As a result, Plantation lost its status as a major economic center and ceased to be a major political player in Florida.

Plantation is a word often used to describe the area around Fort Worth, Texas. The first plantations in this area were erected by the Spanish in the 16th century. By 1821, most of what is now Plantation had been acquired by Englishman George Washington and his family. It was from these families that many of the early plantation owners came from. In 1848, after Florida became a state, Frederic Poynter bought some land east of Tampa Bay for $6,000. This became known as Poynter's Peninsula. In 1860, he divided his land into five tracts and sold them to other investors for slaves. The slave trade continued until 1865 when all slaves were Freedmen’s Bureau property and abolished statewide. The original buildings on Fort Worth Place were built in 1824-27 by Captain James Kenedy as a military post designed to protect travelers passing through the region on their way to or from Mexico City (then called Texcoco). A small town grew up around Kenedy's Post; it was abandoned in 1868 when Fort Worth was moved southward along the new route overland from Dallas to its current location near downtown. In 1840, Major Lorenzo Dowdy purchased 1,200 acres (500 hectares) at Clearwater River close to present day Stonington Beach for $5 per acre ($75 per hectare). With an excellent harbor at his disposal and access to fresh water resources mediated through canals dug through Turtle Island, Dowdy quickly began developing this estate into one of Florida's largest sugar plantations (known today as Dowdy Farms). The first crop yielded crops worth $1 million dollars within three years following purchase! Dowdy married Lydia Lubbock on November 12th 1840 while they resided atClearwater River Estate.(Lydia died young without children.) They raised six children here: Lucy Elizabeth Dowdy born October 10th 1841; Johnathan Augustus Dowdy born December 24th 1843; Darius Anthony Dowdy July 21st1845; Hernando Lafayette Drew August 29th1847; Emory Lamar DOWNEY JR., September 25th1849-January 2nd1950) Lydia also founded Clearwater Female Seminary which still operates today.( See below .) Dowdy also attempted to establish a cattle ranch but failed due largely to lack of Floyd County support during Reconstruction era . Slavery was abolished statewide in 1865 but there remained large numbers of freedmen living throughout this period working off plantations north of Tallahassee .) After emancipation most former slaves left immediately for Canada where they could be free under Canadian law which allowed black people full citizenship rights
The Plantation is located in the heart of downtown Jacksonville, Florida and was built by Governor Manuel Key in 1795. The original house was destroyed by fire in 1811 and was replaced with a larger one. The Plantation was known for its sugar cane plantations and its slaves. The plantation system ended after the Civil War.
