The first African American settler in south Florida was John Fenton who arrived in 1837. In 1840 he married Maria Vespucci and naming their plantation "Fenton's Key" after himself and his wife. After her death in 1845 he sold it to Captains J.P. Morgan and A.J Boyd who turned it into a sugar plantation known as Boyd's Plantation which remain today as one of Miami-Dade County's most valuable properties."
