With so many people living close together during those early days, infrastructure wasn't really needed until after World War II when growth began spiking thanks to suburban development nearby; today's downtown areas were gradually built up through economic development first handouts from some of south Florida's most powerful interests over several decades starting with Mayor Bob Buckhorn's administration in the early 1970s[7].
