Plant City is a city in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 34,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Ft. Walton Regional Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Covington" was derived from Captain John Covington's purchase of land in 1824 from the Creek Indians for $4,000 plus 300 slaves labor to build a fortuitous fishing spot on what later became Volusia County beachfront. By 1860, Plant City had grown to include 14 buildings and consisted of 100 citizens. In 1907, Jeptha Sledge built Sledge Park on current day SW 5th Avenue across from Gulfstream Park Racetrack in northwest Plant City to commemorate his father's achievement as the first white person to travel through Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood Airport on September 10, 1907 while working as a baggage handler for American Airlines; he also purchased 400 acres (160 hectares) southwest of downtown Plant City which became Sledge Park after him and his wife donated it to the city in 1944.# In 1933 during Palm Sunday services held at Saint Augustine Cathedral located south of downtown Plant City following passage of Act No. 810 entitled "An Act To Enable Churches To Do Good Work And Helping The Needy", Reva Baughn announced that she would start baking bread using her own flour from her home garden instead of buying it from a grocery store because "the Lord has given us this country".
