Plant City was founded by John Hartsfield in 1927 on what is now called "The Island". He named it after his home state of Illinois, where he had been born and raised. In the early days of Plant City's development, the island was only a small piece of land at the mouth of Olustee River. The town grew rapidly from its original 10 residents to 100 by 1930 and then 300 by 1940. By 1961, Plant City had reached 1,000 residents. In 1962, Mayor Wanda Bostwick dedicated a new Recreation Center in honor of her predecessor Aileen Greene who had served as mayor for many years before that. Mayor Bostwick also designated an area along Atlantic Boulevard near First Baptist Church as "The Park" which would be used for public meetings and other civic events. In 1969, Plant City voters approved passage of a $2 million bond issue to improve transportation and infrastructure within the city limits including bridges over Olustee River and improvements to water systems and parks across Town Square into Whatcom County (now Agoura Hills). In 1984, Plant City merged with neighboring Sunrise Beach to form one municipality with a combined population size of 17,492 people – more than twice the size of either town alone! Today's Plant City is known for its history – from its beginnings as an agricultural community dependent on slaves working on plantations down through its time as a center for light industry during World War II – as well as its present day attractions such as Disney World Resort Resort & Spa ( located just outside town), Major League Baseball's Tampa Bay Rays (the city's former team) and several golf courses located throughouttownsite including Clearwater Golf Club., The growth rates seen in both municipalities during recent decades have led to increased government spending on infrastructure projects that include: wideningsof Olustee River; replacementof numerous streetlights; installationof new roadways; enlargeingsofthe recreation center; constructionof several major highways including I-95/I-4/US 95E; additions tothe Lake Okeechobee Marina complex.;And much more! Plant City's history dates back to 1892 when Jno Danno built a small cotton gin on his property east of town for processing bales of cottonseed imported from Alabama and Georgia. The first post office was established in 1898, and by 1907 Plant City had become a thriving community with several businesses including hardware stores, grocery stores, lumberyards and restaurants. In 1928, Pittsburgh entrepreneur Jules Blum developed what would become Blum's Mills which became one of the largest textile mills in North America after opening its doors to manufacturing silk stockings, twill fabric and other textiles. After years of steady growth and development at Blum's Mills – which included the construction of a new mill building in 1954 – Plant City finally attained its current status as an independent city on July 1st 1959 when it incorporated as a municipal corporation under the name "Plant City". During World War II; PlantCity played host to many different military installations such as Ft Polk (now Vicksburg), US Army Air Forces Station Clearwater (later Camp Butler) and Naval Air Station Miramar (now Naval Air Station Tampa).
Plant City, Florida was founded in 1898 by John P. Morgan and his brother-in-law, George H. Smith. The town derived its name from the local citrus crops that were being grown there at the time. The first post office in Plant City was opened in 1899. In 1912, the United States Postal Service established a ZIP code for Plant City which remained in use until 1971.
