The name "Plant City" comes from the Seminole word "palm," which means "place where palm trees grow." The first Europeans to visit Plant City were Spanish conquistadors who named it San Juan de Palma because they thought that the palms there might be able to provide them with fruit. In 1892, Hinchcliffe bought 160 acres of land east of downtown for $2 per acre. He built a small chapel and named his settlement after St. Augustine, Florida's patron saint. The first resident post office was opened in 1893 and by 1907 Plant City had a population of 100 residents. In 1915, local businessman Jerald Ladd purchased 2,000 acres north of downtown for use as a citrus orchard and citrus processing plant. The first fruits sold at Ladd's store were oranges and grapefruit but soon other products were added such as apples and bananas. By 1925 Ladd's Orchards had produced more than 1 million boxes of oranges alone! After World War II ended, many people left Plant City for better opportunities in Tampa or Miami but some stayed behind to continue their businesses such as Ladd’s successor Jerald Wiedemann who still operates his business today (Wiedemann Orchards). So much progress has been made since then that we can only imagine what will happen when our current generation dies off or leaves town for greener pastures! Today Plant City is known for its festivals such as Oktoberfest (which takes place every October), its great shopping options including Southardi's Department Store which opened in 1905 and closed in 2003 but remains one of the most popular retail destinations anywhere in Florida; its wide variety of restaurants including several Italian-American establishments; itsissanado Speedway which hosts races each fall; its beautiful golf courses including Old Course at Palm Beach Gardens; its well-preserved historical architecture including some pre-war buildings dating back to 1865; recent additions such as the amphitheater which seats up to 6,000 people.;andits rich cultural heritage which includes aspects like African American music performed at night at Boundary Bay Casino Resort; among others!
