In 1824, a group of English colonists named John Fenton purchased land in what is now Plant City from the Seminole Indians. The town was founded on October 26, 1825 by Fenton and his friends James Caldwell and George Stephenson. In 1836, Jacksonville became an American state and PlantCity fell within Jacksonville’s boundaries. However, during the Second Seminole War (1835-1839), plant city sided with Tampa against Jacksonville. This led to conflict between Jacksonville and PlantCity until 1840 when all three towns joined together to form Fort Meade which served as a military post for both Tampa and PlantCity. During Reconstruction after the Civil War (1865-1868), Fort Meade was abandoned and most of its equipment was destroyed. However, some of this equipment was used to build new military posts throughout eastern Florida including Camp Butler in Palm Beach County and Camp Pickens in Tallahassee County. In 1898, citrus production began in what is now Plantersville on Citrus Key Island off Florida’s Gulf coast. Plants were established near various shipping terminals along Miami’s Everglades River so that fruit could be transported direct to markets across America without having to go through Mobile or Havana also known as “the three Coasts” because of their importance in sugarcane exports from Cuba at that time. By 1915, Citrus Key had become one of world’s leading citrusgrowing areas with yields reaching 120 bushels per acre (3 qt/acre). In 1932, Citrus Key formally ceded its island rights to Miami so that Miami could develop it into an urban area using public money provided by Congressman Claude Pepper who later became Governor of Florida During World War II (1939-1945), segments of southern Pinellas County outside St Petersburg were annexed into Plant City as part of Project 121 which aimed to increase armament production at plants located there by increasing access to aluminum ore from mines located adjacent thereto . After hostilities ended in 1945, most operations at those plants ending up being relocated elsewhere within less than a year due largely to cost overruns associated with wartime production . By 1951 census only 2% of residents still lived within town limits while 98% resided either inside or outside the city limits
