The area that now makes up Pinellas Park was once part of what was known as Indian Springs Township. In 1868, a group of settlers from Tampa bought 2,000 acres (800 ha) of land at what is now Birch Point Road and State Road 10 east of present-day Sarasota Boulevard. They named their new township Indian Springs after the springs they discovered there. The first post office in this township was established in 1870; it later became known as Gulf Breeze. In 1880, a major fire destroyed much of Indian Springs Township; however, some settlers reestablished themselves there and started to name their communities after coastal towns or other landmark sites in Central Florida such as Fort Pierce (later Fort Myers), Stonington (later West Palm Beach), or Daytona Beach. In 1906, when Lake Okeechobee began to fill up with water due to climate change caused by hurricanes Samuel and Frances, many people in central Florida saw an opportunity to build a resort on the lakeide property between Fort Myers and Naples that would be both luxurious and scientific: a research station called "Eagle's Nest".
