Pinellas Park is a small town located in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Pinellas Park were farmers who moved from Virginia in 1819. In 1828, developers bought 160 acres (60 ha) of land east of St Petersburg and named it "Pinellas Park". The park was originally just a depression on the bank of the bayous Key Largo River. In 1956, Pinellas Park became an incorporated municipality and voted to start charging for water and sewer services to its residents. In 1962, voters passed a resolution that designated Pinellas Park as a national historic district. In 1984, the city approved plans to annex portions of neighboring Clearwater Beach into its boundaries; these annexation proposals were met with strong opposition from Clearwater Beach residents who felt they had been taken advantage of by the city. On January 1st, 2008, Pinellas Park merged with neighbouring Clearwater Beach to form one municipality known as "Pinellas Parks". This merger was proposed by mayor Bob Buckhorn and approved by the city council on December 12th 2007 without any public hearings or input from residents. The new municipality has since adopted an official name – "Clearwater Parks" – but maintains its own email address and website (www.pinesparkflorida.gov).
The Pinellas Park area was first settled in the early 1800s by the Seminoles. The land that now makes up Pinellas Park was donated by Captain James Wainwright to the Seminole Tribe of Florida in 1835. The first Church of Christ, Scientist was built on this site in 1839. In 1845, President James K. Polk founded a military post at Fort Brooke which served as a base for American forces during the Mexican-American War. After America's victory, Fort Brooke became a key U.S military outpost and remained so until it was closed in 1902. In 1907, Pinellas Park became part of Hillsborough County and began receiving its own government with a mayor and town board. In 1916, Holland Street was renamed for Commodore John Denny who had helped organize Tampa's defenses during World War I. During World War II, Pinellas Park played an important role in the Battle of Normandy where United States Marines fought against Japanese soldiers
