With assistance from local banks and donations from business owners in Tampa Bay Area, construction began in 1957 with completion six years later than originally planned due to shortages of money following World War II rationing; however, interest in using the complex remained high up until its closure by 1974 due to budget cuts during Nixon's presidency which led to crime rates spiraling out of control throughout Southeast Florida In 1998/1999 new management took over Pinellas Park after it fell into disrepair following several years of ownership by a group that included developers who wanted to turn it into an upscale condominium community known as "Hollywood Hills".
