Pinellas Park is a small city in southern Pinellas County, Florida. It was founded in 1892 by George W. Pickens as a citrus colony on the former site of what is now Clearwater Beach. The city's original name, Tampa Bay City, was changed to Pinellas Park in 1926 because of its location at the mouth of the noble bay that forms part of Tampa Bay. In 1927, the city annexes neighboring St Petersburg and became one municipality with a population of over 100,000 people. The annexation made Pinellas Park an Urban Village with full voting rights and responsibility for all local government functions except street cleaning and fire protection. The first mayor of Pinellas Park was Jock Mahoney and it has had four mayors since then: Harry S Truman (1948-1950), Lee Atwater (1952-1958), Bob Buckman (1959-1963) and Carl Ward (1964-1968). The United States Census Bureau reported that Pinellas Park had a population of 127,814 as of 2000. This number decreased to 106,711 by 2010 census estimate. According to the 2010 census report there are only 86,193 residents living within city limits while another 1255 people live in annexed communities located outside city limits
Pinellas Park began as part of the Gulf Coast region in the 1800s. The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans, who named it for a pine tree that grew near their dwellings. The first Europeans to visit Pinellas Park were Spanish explorers in 1795, and they named it Villa de las Palmas because of its location on the island of Palm Beach. In 1836, a group of United States Marines under the command of Commodore James K. Polk map-drawn from memory sailed through the mouth of Tampa Bay and discovered Pinellas Park. They renamed it Camp Stonington after General James A. Stonington, one of their commanders. The area around Pinellas Park was initially used for agricultural purposes until the late 1800s when a railroad was built through it. This led to development in the area and various businesses were opened including a cotton gin, grocery store, and brewery. In 1907, Pinellas Park became an incorporated town with a population of about 160 people. It remained an unincorporated community until 1914 when it became part of Hillsborough County and changed its name to Clearwater
