In 1954 pinecrest voters approved another name change – Pine Crest – which has been used ever since. In 1957 Pine Crest Elementary School opened after being built on land donated by Mrs. Clifford Aiken; it remains one of the most popular schools in town today with over 900 students enrolled grades PreK through 12th grade. The school district purchased the property adjacent to it in 1966 and renovated it into what is now called First Baptist Church Elementary School; this building still serves as their main facility for instruction as well as housing classrooms, offices and community hall during special events such as church services or family reunions. As economic times have improved through agriculture and manufacturing endeavors within town limits there has been corresponding growth within many aspects of life including retail businesses, health care providers (including two urgent care clinics) along with more than 20 residences occupied by people working downtown or commuting into town for work purposes alone; furthermore there are numerous autos/trucks parked behind First Baptist Church every day between 7am-4pm waiting for their turn at the local gas station across from downtown! Pinecrest is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Medford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Pinecrest comes from a local bird: the pine cockatoo. The first settler in Pinecrest was John Parkin, who arrived in 1837. In 1851, James Hargrave and his family opened a store and post office in what is now downtown Pinecrest. In 1865, Phebe Jarvis acquisition of land on which to build her home allowed for more than one settler per acre (1/2). In 1884-85, the Territorial Legislature passed an act allowing for organized township government with its own fire department and school district; Pinecrest's first residents were appointed trustees to organize these new government structures. By 1888 Pinecrest had a two-story white frame schoolhouse and three blacksmith shops; by 1890 it had five stores (one each for men and women), four homes (all new built), two churches (Anglican and Methodist), one machine shop (the original Parkin Machine Shop building still stands today), six horses, three wagons, one buggy teamster service station and one post office near what is now I-4 southbound exit number 1A off Business US Highway 4 near State Road 5; all this growth came about as result of purchases by developers including Atherton & Sons Hardware Co., J.C.'s Drug Store & Cigar Store et al.; Girdwood Homes bought land east of SR 5 between SR 5 & US Highway 4 in 1922; Girdwood Homes also developed several miles of highway north of their property between US Highways 4 & 7 through what is now known as Highland Hills
