In 1944, the United States Postal Service merged with the Florida Post Office to form the American Mail Corporation. As part of this merger, Pinecrest became part of the new company's Miami-Dade division. The American Mail Corporation ceased operations in 1959 and its assets were auctioned off by the Federal government. The cash balance of its checking account at Citibank was used to purchase two homes in Coral Gables for $10,000 each and donated them to the town for use as public housing. Since 1961, Pinecrest has been governed by a Mayor-Council system under which all residents are voice taxpayers who have one vote per year on issues such as budgeting and land purchases.
