Pinecrest is a town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Myers Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pinecrest is located on U.S. Highway 441 in north-central Escambia County and borders with Lakeland to the north and west, Lafayette to the east, and Panama City Beach to the south. The town was named for pine trees that grew abundantly near its original location on level ground about one mile from present day Pinecrest Road (now US 41). The first post office in Pinecrest was established on July 14, 1892, and remained open until it closed on October 24 of that year due to lack of mail service from Escambia County. In 1903 a sawmill called "Moses" was built by George Waddell in what is now downtown Pinecrest; this mill produced lumber for local homes and also exported lumber to Pensacola and Mobile Bayou counties. A second sawmill built by Waddell called "Thorn" operated until 1907 when it went out of business due to overloading problems caused by growth within Escambia County during that time period In 1916 a new high school was built in downtown Pinecrest after voters approved a bond issue for this purpose – then known as "Pine Crest High School". With only six students per class back then (the maximum allowed under state law), an extra classroom had to be constructed just inside the front door which still stands today as the Administration Building! Classes began operations September 1st 1916 with Miss Clara Hall as our first teacher In 1922 an express train came into town from Pensacola stopping at McClellan Station; passengers disembarked here for lunch before continuing their journey home On November 12th 1923 Hurricane Agnes destroyed much of Pensacola leaving residents stranded without power or water; as a resultrewith many businesses closing up shop including J & L Dyer's store where Mrs Dyer sat all day waiting for her son John who finally got some relief supplies - she never did get her money back! As a result of this event many people left town taking any assets they could find such as furniture, clothes etc.; however most folks returned eventually A new high school opened again in 1926 adjacent to McClellan Station after votersapproved another bond issue In 1928 another express train came into town stopped at Gulfport Junction railroad station causing passengers to disembark here too; later these trains were discontinued because Gulfport became too big an addition compared to other towns needing only locals coming through Many citizens moved away during World War II since there were no jobs available anywhere else but overseas so much so that even though Hiroshima bombing took place nearby we didn’t hear about it until after everyone had left! Pinecrest is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 4,713 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pinecrest is located on SR 1008 north of the center of town and east of US 1. The first person to live in Pinecrest was John Ladd who settled there in 1892. There were no villages or towns established until 1922 when Indianola Village was founded by settlers from Indianola, Mississippi. The name Pinecrest came about because of a pine tree that stood high in the community and could be seen from all around. In 1933, a post office called "Mason" was established in response to mail being sent to both "Pinecrest" and "Indianola". In 1936, an agricultural fair was held at the Community House which attracted many people to Pinecrest for food and entertainment. In 1942, World War II began with America's entry into World War II and much activity took place in the community as soldiers were drafted and more people moved into the area for war work. In 1948, an airfield named after General George Custer (USA) was opened near what is now SR 1008-US 1 intersection northeast of town limits which served as a training ground for Mustangs during World War II before it became a military base known as Eglin Air Force Base later renamed Alachua Air National Guard Base / Pinecrest Army Corp Plant After Alachua Agrarian College closed down in 1970 most students relocated to Gulfport where they founded their own college - Gulfport State University In 1957 it became apparent that pine trees were not going to grow anymore so local farmers started planting other types of trees such as palm trees instead which continues today . As time went on residents voted on whether they wanted annexation by Tallahassee so Pinecrest would have its own municipality but this never happened however due to objections from neighboring towns such as Allendale A new elementary school building was completed in 1959 followed by another one built 1978-1981 also known as Old School #2 . On December 5th 1961 locals met at Old School #2to vote on annexing Allendale which they did with help from Tallahassee City Hall In 1984 a water system expansion project costing $5 millionwas funded through state funding with federal matching funds totaling $7 millionwas authorized making it one of only twowater systems expansions ever authorized within state lines during that period . This project included new construction of four drinking fountains including one located outside present day town limits
