It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area and is considered a retirement community. Pinecrest has a golf course, three tennis courts, and two swimming pools. The first settlers to Pinecrest were Englishmen who arrived in 1836. They built the original homes on the site that now comprises Pinecrest Village. In 1892, the name of the village was changed to Cedar Key after its residents donated land for a municipal park. Cedar Key was annexed by Pinecrest in 1954 and became part of the town limits when it merged with Volusia County. In 1959, Pinecrest established an athletic program which evolved into what is now known as the "Orlando Panthers". The Panthers are members of both Florida State University's NCAA Division I men's basketball and women's volleyball programs as well as US Naval Academy Preparatory School's varsity boys' soccer team. In 1984, they joined forces with nearby Oviedo to become one school under one roof called Oviedo High School/Pinecrest High School; this merger resulted in increased enrollment due to increased competition from other high schools for students who desired career opportunities in technology or professional services fields such as engineering or accounting jobs outside of their home towns. In 2001, pine Crests football team achieved its first championship trophy ever when they defeated NorthStroudsburg (PA) 49-7 in Super Bowl XXXVI at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL Since then PINECRESHTOWN FOOTBALL TEAM HAS WON 8 TIMES IN A row!!!
