PINECREST, FLORIDA is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area and lies on the Gulf of Mexico between Tampa Bay and Miami. Pinecrest has a humid subtropical climate with average monthly temperatures ranging from 86 degrees Fahrenheit to 34 degrees Fahrenheit. The history of Pinecrest goes back to 1892 when two brothers, J.C. and Jesse White bought land in what is now Pinecrest for $1 per acre. The Whites were among the first people to settle in Polk County after it was organized as a county on March 4, 1892. In 1915, Jesse White donated 3 acres of his property to the city of Clearwater which then built a school on it as part of its annexation into Clearwater County that same year. In 1922, Clearwater annexed Pinecrest into its municipality and renamed it after him - Pinecrest City (now Hillsborough). In 1974, the City Council amended their Constitution to allow Nonprofit Partnerships (NP) within Municipal Jurisdictions (Municipalities have more power than public bodies). As a result, Pinecrest became one such Municipality under NP control with no mayor or council members but instead an advisory board made up largely of volunteers who serve four-year terms renewable by vote at any time without pay (the term limits are also set by law). Mayor John Gossage resigned effective January 1st 2014 due to health concerns; he had been elected twice based upon his popularity as an advisor rather than governing as a Mayor within Municipal Jurisdiction like all other public officials in Florida--a right he had enjoyed since being appointed by Mayor Bob Buckhorn in 1978 following the resignation of Jim Gossage following impeachment proceedings brought against him for perjury during his time as Governor of Florida). Pinecrest is a small town in Okaloosa County, Florida, United States. The population was 597 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The community was founded by John and Anna Pine in 1892. Pinecrest is located on State Road 693 east of Jacksonville and west of Plantation Key on a peninsula formed by two rivers: the St Johns River to the north and the Apalachicola River to the south. Highway 9 runs through Pinecrest, providing access to both rivers and Point Clear National Wildlife Refuge to the east. As early as 1892, Anna Pine desired that her community be named after pine trees that she had seen in Japan while on an inspection tour of American possessions during the Meiji period (1868-1912). She sent postcards from Japan bearing this name to her husband John, who already owned land in Okaloosa County. After some debate among family members about which name to choose, they decided on Pinecrest based on Anna's observation that "the pines are so tall here" and because "Anna wanted every person she met in her new home to know it was hers." The first structures were built circa 1893 using logs salvaged from nearby Plantation Key. By 1896, there were six houses with outbuildings including a chicken coop and four barns/storage buildings for hay, cornmeal, nails, etc., along with a couple of ponds used for swimming and fishing.
