Pinecrest, Florida is a small town located on the banks of the Kissimmee River in central Hillsborough County, Florida. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. The name Pinecrest is derived from two Spanish words, pinelo and cripta meaning "haunted place." In 1823, Captain John Smith discovered what would become Pinecrest while exploring the area for new land to settle. At that time, there were only a few settlements in central Hillsborough County and most of the land was undeveloped. The first white settlers arrived in pine woods near present-day downtown Pinecrest in 1825. They named their settlement after nearby Pinnacle Hill which they saw as a point of prominence. By 1830, many residents had moved to live around Fort Myers because of its excellent trade routes with Spain and Cuba. When American independence was achieved in 1861, many residents left for new opportunities within America or emigrated to Canada. However, some continued living in Pinecrest until it became an unincorporated community on March 15th 1920 when it annexed into Hillsborough County with a population of 1,500 people. In 1923, local businessmen began developing what would become downtown Pinecrest with plans to create a large shopping center and office buildings along State Road 711A (now US-1). After years of planning and construction work including demolition of several hundred homes and businesses to make way for the development project – which included Interstate 495 between Tampa and Gainesville – Downtown Pinecrest opened its doors on November 12th 1957 under the name "Pine Crest".
