Hammett In 1887, Captain William Dickson organized the "Florida Volunteer Infantry" under United States General James Kenedy Jr.. On October 15th of that year, Captain Dickson led his unit into battle against Indians near Spring Hill Station on Lake Okeechobee Creekknown then as Tomahawk Swamp: After routing their opponents 3 times out of 5 engagements they decided not pursue further due To depletion Of ammunition however Lt Col David Worth took command & led them w/o any loss through hard fighting thru 12 months raiding Indian Country

During World War II, additional development took place at nearby Naval Air Station Seal Beach which eventually led to the creation of Pine Crest Mall on Sumter Boulevard which served as both retail and military facilities until its closure in 1993-1994. The most recent incarnation of the mall saw some redevelopment beginning in early 2006; however no major progress has been made since then, with most activity consisting of leased space currently used for offices or other commercial uses such as an auto dealership
Pinecrest is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 17,867 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Pinecrest was John Peyton in 1836. The site that would become Pinecrest was surveyed by Captain James Cook and named after him in 1839. A post office called "Pinecrest" opened on January 1, 1840, and remained open until December 12, 1898. In 1860 Seminole War veteran General George Armstrong Custer fought near present day Pinecrest during the Civil War. He had been bayoneted through the heart just south of town while raiding supplies for his Confederate forces and died soon afterwards at a hospital in Tampa without ever regaining consciousness or leaving his bedside. As a result of this public tragedy nearby residents prohibitively priced land around Custer's battlefield grave stoppedSoldiers from attacking other parts of town for fear they might do the same to their dead comrade's remains as well (a practice still carried out today). After World War II many businesses moved out of downtown Tampa into new buildings such as IBM, Ford Motors plants and more modern offices near Hillsborough Bay Boulevard which became known as "The Strip". This left downtown with few inhabitants except for truckers stopping at old gas stations on US-1 outside of town on their way to or from St Petersburg or Clearwater Beach. In the early 1970s developers began purchasing large tracts of undeveloped land between Hillsborough Boulevard and US-1 to build an immense shopping mall which would have included over 50 stores including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney, Macy's department store and 20 movie theaters across five levels including one with a 3D screen. Partially completed by 1990 it formally renamed itself "Pine Crest Mall" but failed to lure much traffic despite being adjacent to numerous high-end retailers such as Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue who both relocated away after developing better designs within walking distance of other malls like SouthPark Centre or Times Square/ Penn Station.
