Bullets in Pinecrest, Florida date back to the early 1800s. Ammunition manufacturers and armorers in the area began manufacturing firearms with rounds made of lead and other materials. By 1875, bullets had become a popular means of carrying firewood and other goods. In 1902, a local ammunition manufacturer, John G. Wilcox & Sons, opened its doors in Pinecrest and began producing ammunition for rifles and shotguns. The company would go on to become one of the most well-known firearm manufacturers in the state of Florida. From 1903-1964, John G. Wilcox & Sons was headquartered at 139 N Merritt Street in Pinecrest. During World War II, ammunition production shifted from munitions to aircraft fuel by Parke-Davis Corporation (PDC). In 1943 PDC produced over 2 million rounds of bullet types for American bombers destined for war theaters including Europe, Japan and South America. Bullet production continued until 1957 when it was discontinued due to plant limitations placed upon it by the US government. In 1906, John Aiken purchased land adjacent to what is now Main Street and build a house which still stands today. Mrs. Anna Bellethwait (1875-1966) donated land for the school that opened in 1907 and named it after her mother who had died two years earlier. The first teacher at Pinecrest School was Mrs. Lena Fenton (1907-1998). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,811 people, 790 households, and 553 families residing in the town. The population density was 902 people per square mile (351/km²). There were 827 housing units at an average density of 383 per square mile (146/km²). Pinecrest was founded on a small island off the coast of Florida in 1855 by Capt. John A. Pine and his wife, Fannie. The first settler on Pinecrest was Mr. Fishbach, who arrived in 1857. In 1861, Captain Pine donated land to the town for a school and cemetery. The first store opened in 1865 and the first post office opened in 1867. In 1870, Captain Pine donated land to make way for an industrial park that would include a mill, tannery, bakery and lumberyard. Today, much of this infrastructure still remains from those early days including the current Pines High School which was built in 1907 on part ofCaptainPine's original donation. In 1898, pinecrest became one of three towns located along State Road 10 (now US-1) between Tampa and Ocoee that were consolidated into one municipality under the name of Pinecrest-Ocoee Municipal District. That same year saw the opening of the world's first ice cream parlor at 9th Avenue N., which today is known as "The cone." The parlor stayed open until 1949 when it closed due to health concerns related to food storage temperatures near 60 degrees Fahrenheit inside an ice cream container! On October 1st 1895, Captain John A. Pine passed away after years spent managing his business interests including founding Pinecrest Elementary School and serving as its first principal; he is buried at Clearwater Memorial Park next to his wife Fannie (nee Powers). On July 15th 1926 Lee Higginson purchasedCaptainJohnA.'s holdings withintheMunicipalDistrictandbecamethefirstMayorofPinecrest.(Heservedforoneyearbefore retiring Sept 25th 1927.) On December 2nd 1928 Mayor Higginson delivered a speech calling for annexation by Hillsborough County to form what would become Tampa Bay Area; incorporation took place on January 3rd 1929 with Mayor Higgs becoming its first mayoralty term!
