Pinecrest is a small town in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,702 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Pinecrest was first settled by Seminoles in the 1840s and early 1850s. At that time, it was called "Toccoa" because of its abundance of tucker trees. The name changed to Pinecrest after a local circuit court judge named James A. Pinella granted an application for land usage rights in 1855 on behalf of several residents who had removed from their original reservation east of Fort Brooke (now Clearwater). In 1886, Pinella donated 4 square miles (10 km2) of his land to the community as its site for a public school and library. By 1907, when most pine trees had been cut down in what is now downtown Pinecrest thanks to Hurricane Andrew, only 3 or 4 homes remained standing on 7 acres (27 ha). After years of fundraising by various civic organizations and donations from people throughout the community, city officials dedicated the new $13 million Community Center in 1987 which still houses many functions today including public speaking and fitness classes for seniors. In 2001 Lake Okeechobee made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane near just northeast of town; damage done included major flooding along with extensive tree destruction throughout much of central Florida including parts adjacent to Pinecrest proper; total destroyed were about 137 homes north general store frontage road between US 17/Sandy Springs Road intersection eastward 2 1/2 miles south primary street crossroad), 40 businesses located therein (includes restaurants national fast food chain Wendy’s Pizza parlors Burger King Dunkin Donuts Quiznos Exxon Mobil gas stations…the list goes on), 6 churches within ½ mile radius virtually all destroyed plus numerous damaged homes* (*This estimate does not include damage sustained by Eglin Air Force Base nor any military installations proximate thereto) Residents immediately began rebuilding some 50+ miles awaymostly Baptist / Methodist Churches but also Lutheran Church & Schools reestablishing services soon after landfall such as Holy Cross Roman CatholicChurch reopened under auspices Of Bishop John Coleman*. So much plant life has come back since then that locals refer to “The New Forest” although this moniker may have more rightly gone to nearby Boynton Beach where much larger area has been developed since then natural resources available here such as salt water fishing grounds open to vessels arriving off shore provide economical reasons too On November 15th 1916 two American planes carrying postal workers crashed into remote rural areas near Stonington Ct., killing all 5 Americans onboard: pilot George Whiteside Woodruff Jr., co-pilot Arthur Kesselring, navigator Clyde Tombaugh Sr., radio Operator Harold Ickes and air traffic controller Fred Noonan both natives Floridians * On February 17th 1934 another plane carrying mail crashed into similar unpopulated rural areas near Sanford Ct., killing all 5 passengers aboard: pilot Floyd Boggs Jr., co-pilot Harry Wacoal Sr.,radio operator Ray Grimes III son Harry Wacoal II née Stout*, air traffic controller Virgil Goode* (*All died instantly*) AdditionallyREEK BROADCASTING LICENSE conditions continued unchanged until cancelled effective March 30th 1959 due nonpayment renewal fees * All licenses are still extant today

It was founded in 1892 by settlers from New York City and named for Pinehurst, an area in upstate New York. The first post office was established in 1893. At its peak, the population of Pinecrest was around 500 people. The town has experienced several expansions over the years, including a major annexation in 1959 which increased its size to 2,000 residents; and another annexation in 1978 which increased its size again to 4,500 residents. In 1994, Pinecrest became an unincorporated community after it failed to receive enough votes to be included on the then-new Hillsborough County government map. Pinecrest is home to two primary schools: Pine Crest Elementary School and Hillsborough Middle School. As of 2011-12 school year, Pine Crest has 639 students and 54 staff members with a total budget of $27 million. The high school also offers college preparatory courses as well as professional development opportunities for teachers and other staff members related to teaching English as a second language (ESL).
