Pinecrest is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1892 on the east bank of the Stonington River by Jno. Pritchard and others as "Pinecrest Heights". In 1902 it became an incorporated town under the name Pinecrest after its elevation on State Road 10 from its original site on what later became Indianola Boulevard between US 192 and SR 511. In 1957 Pinecrest annexed portions of unincorporated territory to its north including parts of Clearwater Beach and Sunrise because those towns were either growing or had their own police forces. On December 8, 1984, Pinecrest voters approved a proposition to change its name to "Cainesville" after Seminole County Commissioner Ewing Cain who had been a leading advocate for the measure. The name change took effect January 1, 1985 when state law changed from first-to-last letter order according to county names. The Town Council moved into their new building which was built in 1978 on land donated by Mayor Don Edwards and other civic leaders following complaints that City Hall was too small and inadequate for their needs. On July 1, 2009 Pinecrest voters passed a Resolution designating September 15th as "Town Day" in order to recognize all that has happened since then during community growth initiatives such as fundraisers for various charities/nonprofits or special events like Homecoming weekend or Christmas Tree Lighting night etc.; all without ever having any Government funding involved! pine Crest Fm radio station located here
