Pensacola, Florida is a town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 26,952 at the 2010 census. Pensacola was founded by Spaniards in 1759 as part of the mission system of Spanish America. It became an English-speaking community in 1819 and a Seminole Indian Reservation in 1835. It became a city on December 3, 1907. On January 1, 1959, Pensacola turned over its charter to become an incorporated city with the name of "Pensacola". In May 1898 it was announced that the United States Naval Station Pensacola would close due to budget cuts and be replaced by Fort Donelson National Military Park on Alabama Street on the island of Santa Rosa de Tenerife (the old fort had been built in 1798). The new station would house 5 battleships and 10 submarines totaling 2,000 tons/shipyard capacity The loss of USNS Pensacola led to some controversy among those who felt that their favorite naval base should have remained open while another facility was built nearby; many people lobbied for years unsuccessfully for Fort Donelson to be transferred from NAS Jacksonville to NAS Pensacola. In 1901 Congress appropriated $1 million for construction at NAS Jacksonville which began in 1903 and ended in 1920; however no warships were ever delivered because of World War II bombing raids against Japan that destroyed much of the Navy's Atlantic Fleet yards including NAS Jacksonville. By then Fort Donelson had become too small for military use and was closed down on July 15th 1960 along with most other Naval stations across the country as part of Defense Reorganization Act Of 1958 which eliminated all federal civilian employment within DoD except for Education Department personnel employed by state universities which were retained under Title IV funding until 1974 when they were placed under Title I funding.
Before the arrival of European settlers in what is now Pensacola, Florida, the area was inhabited by the Seminole people. The first Europeans to set foot in the area were Spanish explorers who established a trading post at Fort San Marcos in 1810. Agrarian growth began to occur in this region as crops such as maize and sugarcane were developed. In 1838, Pensacola became part of the United States after it was captured from Spain by American forces during the Mexican-American War. The city experienced rapid growth following its annexation by Pensacola on November 14, 1881. Growth continued through World War II until a natural disaster struck on September 15, 1945 which destroyed much of downtown and caused extensive damage. Afterward, downtown Pensacola reverted to its pre-injury state; however, some redevelopment has occurred over time including the construction of Northwest Park and renovations to Alumni Stadium which reopened in May 2016.
