Pensacola, Florida was founded on November 3rd, 1819 by Captain John P. Morgan and his group of American sailors. The town was named after the Pensacola Peninsula in Spanish America. The original town site was located on a small island in the bay which is now known as downtown Pensacola. The area that is now Pensacola was first inhabited by the Timucua people who lived there for hundreds of years before being displaced by the Apalachee tribe. In 1697, Englishman James Cook recognized the peninsula as part of Spanish Florida and named it Isla de Santa Bárbara after Saint Barbara, an Algonquian woman who had been converted to Christianity and martyrdom at Barcelona in 412 AD. In 1762, when Spain ceded Florida to Britain as part of the Treaty of Paris following their victory over France in the Seven Years War, Pensacola became part of British Florida Territory. At this time, it consisted only of what is today Sarasota County and Putnam County. On January 9th, 1819, United States Navy Captain John P. Morgan set out from Key West with 11 men to found a new Naval Station at Pensacola Bay on Santa Maria Island because he believed that US Naval power could block French attempts to take control of Cuba through Tampa Bay. After arriving at Santa Maria Island they built Fort Caroline which served as their naval base until 1830 when they moved into Fort Adams which overlooked Tampa Bay and functioned as their primary naval depot until 1841 when they moved into Fort George Mifflin which overlooks Mobile Bay and served as their primary naval base until 1845 when they moved into Fort Pickering near modern-day Mobile City Hall. In 1840 Governor Andrew Jackson ordered that all hangings be discontinued in Alabama because he felt this practice encouraged slavery whilehangings were permitted in Georgia due to its status as a slave state during this time period Captain John P Morgan's dream job finally came true when he agreed to serve President James K Polk inilvering American interests throughout Latin America during World War I Aftermath: Many businesses closed down due to prohibition (1920s) The end result: A lack of jobs lead to many residents moving away or becoming refugees (1950s). In 1951 Pensacola joined fellow Floridian Jacksonville as one of three cities merged into Jacksonville proper under then- Mayor Don Shoup . As a result many old buildings remain standing including Federal Reserve Bank #1(now Lutz tower), Candler Building (now University Hospital), Stonington’s Hotel across from Sam’s Club - where General Billy Mitchell met Forrest Gump - oldest still operating bar west coast , First National Bank building (now banks branch) Today: Downtown streets are filled with souvenir shops, restaurants and nightlife
