By 1849, most Spanish residents had left for good and English language usage had become dominant among both locals and newcomers alike In 1898 during Mexican America Day celebrations a fire swept through one of Jacksonville's largest markets killing 30 people and leaving more than 100 homeless The community began looking towards Escambia County for its new government center when Escambia County Courthouse was completed in 1906 Pensacola quickly emerged as an important shipping and trade center with its river access making it ideal for economic development In 1916 construction began on what is now known as courthouse square which included a jail and court house Escambia County Museum opened its doors in 1937 followed by NASM (National Association for State Museums) headquarters which remains today one of Pensacola’s most popular attractions During World War II many businesses closed their doors due to wartime shortages but withstood requests from the military to destroy any materials they may have located inside their buildings including pens , paper cups , pencil cases etc . After hostilities ceased" Pensacolas economy slowly resumed with many companies reopening their doors post-war
