Gun protection history in Pensacola, Florida began with the arrival of firearms to the area in the early 1800s. The first guns that were brought to Pensacola were pistols and rifles. The guns were used for hunting and defense purposes. The first handguns that were brought to Pensacola were muskets. These handguns were used for self-defense and hunting. By 1834, all firearms had been outlawed in Pensacola due to a lack of regulation. This led to the birth of the Pistol Club of Florida which was responsible for keeping pistols legal in Pensacola. The Second Seminole War led to an increase in gun violence in Pensacola. This violence caused many people to lose their lives as they fought for their right to bear arms. As a result, the Gun Owners’ Association was founded in 1944 by local gun owners who wanted more control over firearms within their community. Over time, this organization became more involved with political issues and started protesting government policies that they felt did not protect civilians from harm. In 1970, they organized a peaceful protest against voter suppression laws which led to a shootout between police officers and NRA members at Daytona Beach Boulevard Mall. In 1977, NRA president Jack Lanza traveled to Pensacola on behalf of new NRA chairmen William Bennett and Leonard Lance Jr.. They met with Mayor John Sgroi about how residents could be better protected from crime through increased police presence and gun registration requirements. After meeting with Mayor Sgroi, Lanza returned home and announced his plans for universal background checks on all firearm sales within five years starting with handgun purchases only followed by rifle purchases thereafter (Lanza 1978). Mayor Sgroi agreed with Lanza’s plan but later changed his mind after learning about other problems that would need to be addressed such as public education campaigns highlighting safety concerns aroundguns (Sgroi 1984). There has been occasional active shooting incidents or shootings that have rocked central Florida since then including: 1) On December 14th 2009 when 23 year old gunman Adam Gadahn opened fire inside an high school near Fort Myers injuring 11 people before being fatally shot by security guards; 2) On January 8th 2020 when Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School student Nicholas Cruz killed 17 innocent students before killing himself; 3) On February 14th 2019 after several days of gunfire at Marjorie StonemanDouglas HS our school district evacuated students because there was potential for another shooting
