GUN MAGS HISTORY IN PENSACOLA, FLORIDA BY DAVID L. BALDWIN Gun magazines in Pensacola date back to 1892. The first local magazine was the "Pensacola Patriot" which was started by J.D. McConnell and Elisha Howe. It sold 8 issues a month and had a circulation of 150-200. In 1897, the "Pensacola News" began publication and it lasted for 11 years until it was bought by the "Guns & Ammo" company in 1912. After that, the "News" continued publication until 1954 when it became an afternoon paper and then a morning paper in 1957 before being merged into the "Times-Union". In 1911, there were three gun clubs in Pensacola: The Riflemen's Club, The Pistolero's Club and The Pistolers' Association (later renamed the Pistolero Shooting Association). These organizations met at different times to discuss common interests such as practicing shooting or meeting to plot revolutionary action against Spain. One of the earliest guns imported into Pensacola was an African elephant rifle called "The Enforcer." This gun had been built by George Washington Carver with assistance from American inventor Drury Lane who donated his design to Carver for manufacture. When World War I started, many military officers left home countries to join their units fighting abroad and so not all firearms were available when they returned home or could be obtained only through mail order or through dealers who didn't carry any specific type of firearm. To supplement their income, some soldiers took up arms as unarmed civilians known as “ghosts” because no one knew how they would fare against regular forces armed with rifles and artillery pieces that could shoot accurately at long range. One such phantom is James Wickersham who joined up with Company G ofthe 15th Infantry Regiment on November 6 1916 after leaving his home state of Illinois where he had been working as a machinist for Smith & Wesson Corp.. There are references to Wickersham being discharged from service on December 12 1917 but this information has never been confirmed nor denied by anyone involved in those days’ events related to WWI veteran James Wickersham aka Ghost Jim... His discharge papers still remain sealed inside military records archives located outside Chicago IL today! For all we know this mystery serviceman may have fought bravely on our side during WWI despite receiving death threats from Germany!! In 1837, Captain Fenton sold land to George Waddell for $1 per mile along Pensacola Bayou (then known as Indian River Lagoon). This property became known as Waddell’s Swamp (now part of Business Park Boulevard). On November 12th of that year, Waddell organized a company of militiamen to repel swarms of mosquitoes that were causing an outbreak of fever among Native Americans living near the bayou. The mission accomplished and no deaths resulted from mosquito bites during the campaign; however some natives did develop sickle cell disease from contact with these insects which is still common today among those living near humid areas such as PensacolaBayou
Pensacola, Florida is a city in the U.S. state of Florida, located on Pensacola Bay and its adjacent inland waters. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 64,611. The town was founded by Spaniards in 1795 as Santiago de Cuba and was named for José Joaquín de Pensacola y Valdez, captain general of Spanish America from 1793 to 1812. Pensacola's economy depends largely upon tourism; it is the most visited city in Florida and has become known for its seafood restaurants and white-sand beaches. It is also home to several colleges and universities including University of West Florida (UWF), Catholic University of America (CUA), Alabama A&M University (AAMU), and Gulf Coast Community College (GCC). The first Europeans to visit Pensacola were Alonso Menéndez de Avila and Hernando de Soto who landed on Pensacola Bay on November 30, 1541. After exploring this area they named it Santiago del Cuba after their native country which they had not discovered yet. In 1795 Captain José Joaquín de Pensacola y Valdez opened up trade with Spain at what is now Pensacola Beach Boulevard while landowner Manuel Vázquez granted him three leagues extending along the bay shoreline eastward to Balboa Park then northward to where Mobile Street now meets US 1 near Fort Walton Beach. On July 12, 1800 Pedro Menéndez sailed into Pensacolabidos Bay from Havana Harbor with intentions of trading salt water slaves but his ship wrecked off shore opposite today's Penang Island just south of downtown Pensacola killing all aboard except one man who swam ashore unharmed with some supplies he took downriver before reachingshore again about a mile below low tide point according to contemporary records the island was first called Pulgasco or "Island Of The Turtles" by Indian hunters early traders Contacted there in 1681 by Sancho Pérez governor of Upper Floridas after sighting turtle eggs laid there April 4th 1681 during his punitive expedition against Native Americans led by Father Marqués De la VegaDRB later renamed Santa Elena Point(s) - all that remain today are two small rocks at high tide mark abutting Sorrento Creek waterfront beyond current pens lighthouse Drayton Wright Museum complex Naval Air Station NAS Jacksonville closed February 21990 due consistent budget cuts hence why facility does not appear on map above nor does anyone live or work there currently Today only remnant military base remains Palm Beach County Airport serving community nearby run out Marinas both used for landing craft storage equipment oil rigs barge dock built for TB treatment plant prior exchange Naval Hospital aka hospital building present day inside former jail converted into museum building earlier mentioned USS Constitution docked here June 20 1855 during Seminole Wars

Pensacola, Florida is a city in the U.S. state of Florida and the county seat of Santa Rosa County. The population was 1,839 at the 2010 census. Pensacola was founded by Spanish colonists in 1795 as Fort Caroline on the present site of Pensacola Beach. In 1821, Santa Anna ordered Captain Manuel Gomez to build a fort at Pensacola Beach with cannons to protect this new outpost from British attack; Captain Gomez did so but died soon afterward fighting a American force at Lakelandoma Creek near modern-day Doral Stadiums Parkway and 280th Street SW). After years of construction (beginning around 1825), Fort Caroline finally saw action against HMS Guerriero off Tampa Bay on May 5, 1827 during an exchange of gunfire during Seminole Wars [the battle is also sometimes called Battle At Tampa Bay or Alligator Swamp Massacre]. On July 4th – Groundhog Day – Admiral James Stockton launched his first naval assault against Havana Harbor [the event is generally dated February 22nd but may have been January 25th],1828 using USSusky ( captained by Commodore John Mears) as flagship under Lt Cdr Richard Stockton while Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter led shore forces ashore at Fernandina Beach In 1840–41 Pensacola received its charter from the State Legislature; it became an incorporated town on November 3rd 1840 On December 26th 1861 annexation took place by Santa Rosa County; Pensacola beach became part of that county After World War II many factories closed down throughout southern Florida leaving large numbers unemployed which caused political unrest within city government starting in 1949 culminating into rioting taking place April 12-15th 1951 over jobs lost due to Hurricane Andrew In 1954 Mayor Hernando Sánchez resigned after erupting into violence filled protests over proposed ordinances limiting Negro voting rights
