In 1824 Captain John Davenport sailed up the Mississippi River from New Orleans towards St Petersburg for supplies wagons carrying goods being shipped downriver from Mexico City via Vera Cruz across Lake Texcoco by way of Punta Gorda and Tampa Bay. While sailing past Pensacola Bay he noted its great natural harbor with many ships moored there including two English frigates HMS Euryalus and HMS Andromeda . After disembarking his troops at Fernandina beach he went ashore onshore where he met local Indians who sold him some Indian artifacts which Davenport took back to New Orleans along with seeds for his cattle enterprise known as Rancho Velarde near Galveston which began operations in 1830 under Mexican rule but soon changed hands several times until coming under American control during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). When President Polk listed Texas claims against Mexico on February 14, 1847 ,the U.S.Naval History vessel USS Constitution discovered Velarde's rancho near Pinole Island off Matagorda Bay rather than near Galveston which led Polk to order General Antonio López de Santa AnnaGeneral Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna: A Biography to take possession without waiting for instructions from Washington.
